Google Website Optimizer A/B Tests: Downloadable, Distilled Outline of Necessary Items

So, in setting up an experiment recently for a campaign, I decided to give a very distilled A/B Test outline to team members. Enjoy, and hope your landing page optimization goes well!

  1. Experiment Name:  XYZ
  2. Test pages:
    1. Original URL:  xyz.com
    2. Test URL:  zzyyxx.com
  3. Conversion page:
    1. URL:  thanks.com
  4. Tagging
    1. Original Page:
      1. i.      CONTROL SCRIPT
        1. FUNCTION:
          1. Communicates with Google to “know” alternate URL
          2. Cookies users so they will see the same version upon return
          3. Prevents double counting of return visitor
          4. PLACEMENT:
            1. Copy and paste the Control Script after the <head> Tag of the Original URL.  Make sure it is after any <DOCTYPE> tags
          5. ii.      TRACKING SCRIPT
            1. Placement:
              1. Copy and paste before the </body> tag.
    2. Control Page:
      1. i.      CONTROL SCRIPT
        1. NOT NEEDED
        2. ii.      TRACKING SCRIPT
          1. Placement
            1. Place tracking code before </body> tag.
    3. Conversion Page:
      1. i.      Paste the Conversion code before the </body> tag.  It is different code, so make sure you are grabbing the right one.
