New School SEO and Search Clicks | Youtube

The number one thing in the Digital and Interactive space is to keep your eyes open for new and interesting trends, since there is someone out there doing or introducing new tactics that may be helpful to get clicks to your landing pages.

Doing some music searching and listening on Youtube, I came across DJ Khaled, Drake, Rick Ross, and Lil Wayne via a search.

The top three entries for this song search had collectively had over 1.25 Million views collectively…

but none of the top three for this particular search even had the song for me to hear!!!

What’s the deal?

Since my main goal was to listen to music, I was ticked that I did not hear the song played on either of the top three.  However, as a marketer, I was enthused by a strong, (although elusive) marketing tactic.

These guys goals were two-fold:

  1. Get the user, who thinks they are about to listen to a brand new song, to click through to go to their website where they either market the song OR whatever message about the artists that they want to get across
  2. PLAY THEIR song instead of the searched artist’s song, therefore exposing their song to thousands.

Now again, we see that this is a bit unethical for most corporate entities.  BUT, what we can take from this is the following.

  • Youtube can be used to strategically market keywords associated with your campaign.
  • “In-video” links can provide a click through to your website or optimized landing page.
  • Youtube’s strategically tagged and named videos can be ranked highly in Google.

The “marketers” who are using these tactics, indirectly or directly, on Youtube are smart guys… and can possibly be the next music artists like Soulja Boy or Justin Bieber who used Youtube to get a foot into the door of the tough music industry.

For you, it may just get you into the door of your target demographic in order to meet the key performance indicators of your campaign.
