25 May Sir Mix A Lot and Big BUTTerfingers
I can just imagine 10 Butterfinger interactive/digital marketing executives sitting around a table with catered Starbuck’s and fresh bagels…
“Hey, let’s call Sir Mix A Lot and Erik Estrada… ” and make a “Big Butterfinger” Rap song.
Yea. Ok.
At first, I was like, “…this is SO played. Play a rap song and get a certain audience”.
But I have to admit that I actually watched the whole video. Maybe it is because I liked Sir Mix a Lot back during high school. Or maybe its because I really love the way that Erik Estrada has aged and still looks like Ponch more than ever.
Is that what sells me? Perhaps.
- Novelty sells. Butterfinger won because they got guys like me either ranting or raving.
- Classics sell. As I said, I was in high school (or younger) when Mix A Lot was cranking hits. This song was something that at one time or another, related to millions of people. Maybe Butterfinger won since they could have segmented me out as a persona in that demographic. Even down to the Jerry curl hair styles and 80’s gear the background dancers are wearing, Butterfinger sure has my age group in mind.
Thanks to Lori Luechtefeld of iMedia Connection for also identifying the Incredible Hulk (one of my favs!) also known by his government name: Lou Ferrigno. Also, Charisma Carpenter graces the video well. In her article, she kindly reminds her readers of Sir Mix a Lots short fame with Burger King & Sponge Bob. What a throwback!?
Here is the video… What do you think?
