The Importance of Social Bookmarking

Brandon JohnsonPer Wikipedia, “Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.

In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine. ”

–  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking

What does this mean?  Social Bookmarking allows the public to select those links and stories that may be of importance to a certain niche of people.  If you start a website or blog and someone “socially bookmarks” your site or page’s content, then others may find that content equally as important.

This allows others to visit your site, thus allowing you to capture another site visitor, and potential site subscriber OR better yet, CUSTOMER!!!!

Let me show you an example 🙂

warren buffet

Let me explain to you what you are seeing…

This image is a screen capture from the BlackInternetMarketing.com stats for the month of November 2007.

There were roughly 7360 page views in the Month of November to an article on Warren Buffet that I had posted on the site.

Of these page views, most of them were referred from StumbleUpon.com, a SOCIAL BOOKMARKING site.  You can see this as it results in the following screen print from the referrers section of my stats for the same month.

Over 6800 referrerals came from StumbleUpon.com for that month.  If we averaged this in to DAILY traffic (Divide it by about 30 monthly days), this would equate to about 230 visits a day ALONE from this Social BookMarking Site.  THIS IS HUGE!

Imagine an extra 230 visits to your site a day.  Then imagine being able to sell a product to only 1% of these individuals a day.  That would be about 2-3 sales a day.  Now, imagine a product on a site, where I only made about $10 profit per sale.  When we multiply the $10 for 2-3 sales per day, we made $600 – $900 for that month…..

The question is COULD YOU USE AN EXTRA $600 to $900 a month?

To recap, Social Bookmarking is an important aspect of a viral marketing campaign.  Sometimes, you may be able to even bookmark your own sites in an effort to promote them through the sites.

Good luck in capturing great content to be picked up by your site visitors.  Hopefully, your content too can get Bookmarked on a great subject one day, and you too can capitalize off of the benefits of Big FREE Traffic!
