As I go Analytics & SEO crazy over the past few blog entries, my next focus is on the importance of Social Networking.

I have covered today, the importance of Social BookMarking… But now, we go for the Networking piece.

You see, the guys over at Myspace, Facebook, and other Social Networking Platforms understood the concept of two major assets:  the Viral nature of Social Media and OWNING the site.

We make Google, Yahoo, Myspace, Facebook… we make all large web sites RICH because we frequent those sites, increase their traffic tremendously and do it all with no real immediate return on our time or efforts.  YES, we may network to find our next $million dollar idea and partner.  However, none of these GIVE you a piece of the revenue that they are helping you to make.

All good.  Before I beat that dead horse anymore, the key thing to know is that OWNING the Social Platform has MAJOR benefits.

We added a social networking platform to our site:  www.blackatlanta.com

When I get some major revenue, I will be the FIRST to help directly monetize my site members…

Here is why:

As we can see in the above graphic, we have a user who joined about 2 months ago from this timing.  The amazing thing, is that she uploaded over 40 photos.

Each Photo has its own feature page and this page is INDEXED in Google.  [TAKE A LOOK AT THE PHOTO]  From doing a booleansearch, we are able to search Google for her username on BlackAtlanta.com and the site name itself.  This returned an indexed 175 pages of data!

Now, imagine the HUGE nature of myspace with millions of people uploading photos… Videos….  and blogging and adding notes to groups!

Key learning points are:

  • A community will support itself with enough loyal members.
  • There is an Search Engine Penetration benefit to community OWNERS
  • A community member can easily replicate his her actions, and thus increase search engine penetration.
  • One should try to OWN his or her own Social Network!

    There are many great social networking applications and platforms but the risk inherent in them all is that you don’t own the service and in some cases your content is subject to not being completely under your control. My forum allow me to connect with clients and potential customers while being in control of the networking environment where productive exchanges take place.
