11 Feb How To Upgrade Joomla 1.5
Lots of folks have still been running Joomla 1.5 as a content management system on their websites. I have one in particular, that I need to update to a later version of Joomla. As you may know, Joomla is up to Version 2.5.1 at the time of this writing. I have some major platform updates to do.
But in the case that you need to keep that old and faithful version of Joomla 1.5 running, the upgrade docs are here: http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_from_an_existing_1.5x_version
How I Like to Upgrade
My upgrades on Joomla 1.5 have been very easy. Can you imagine that I’ve upgraded over 20 times now ? I HAD to make it easy.
- Back up your site and database!
- Visit http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_from_an_existing_1.5x_version and find the correct download version. Download and upload to your Joomla root directory.
- From here, I like to use PUTTY to connect via SSH and all I do is issue the command to UNZIP joomlaupgradefile.zip (or whatever your zip name is)
- From there, PUTTY will ask if you want to overwrite the files. I command it to upgrade and overwrite all files.
- Check site and log into back end to see if version has been updated.
- DONE.
To stay up on versions only takes minutes and prevents hours of dealing with restoring backups because of hacks and exploits possible with non-updated code.
A few minutes of prevention, can help and do wonders for your time later.
